Why blocking right-click on websites is stupid

Found a site today that disabled right-clicking. And you know what? I think that’s pretty darn stupid, for a number of reasons.

One, I can’t copy stuff, like say, a link, and then send it to someone.

Two, I can easily disable the JavaScript causing it or install some browser extension to allow me to right click on websites that block it, so it’s basically worthless.

Three, it’s very annoying. I mean WTH…

I know there’s some good reasons why to keep people from right-clicking. Some people don’t want their article stolen, others, code. But anybody after your code will know how to disable the JavaScript keeping them from right-clicking on the page, if they don’t open the browser’s dev tools with a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+I on Chrome).

And copying articles? What if someone wants to copy an excerpt or a link out of the article? You’re just going to make them mad, and mad people seldom return to websites. Besides, if someone steals your article, just DMCA them. Personally I don’t really care if any of my articles get stolen.

So yeah, don’t block right-clicks. It’s stupid, and it doesn’t do much because I can bypass it in about 5-10 seconds.
